What is Rotational molding

There are numerous advantages to rotomolding products. Rotomolding is a stress-free process which yields parts that are stronger than other plastic processes. Polyethylene is that material that is most commonly used for rotomolding. Polyethylene has an extremely long-life span, is impervious to the elements and is one of the most durable materials on the planet. Rotomolded polyethylene parts are often lighter weight than many other materials. When the proper grades of materials for rotomolding are used, rotomolded products can be exposed to sunlight and used outside with little to no deterioration. Playground equipment is often rotomolded because of this feature. Polyethylene can also be exposed to various caustic chemicals without deterioration which is the reason many chemical tanks are rotomolded. Many stainless steel tanks have a PE liner that is rotomolded inside of them. FDA requirements for food grade manufacturing can be met via the rotomolding process from specific grades of certified prime virgin materials. Because of the diversity of materials and products, numerous rotomolded products are often seen in the food industry.

Rotationally molded products have virtually a limitless capacity in industry. A growing trend in manufacturing is to convert products made of less durable materials into a rotomolded product. Rotomolding provides a large number of benefits because of the process and the characteristics of the materials. Pallets, agricultural tanks, drainage piping, laundry carts, department of defense items, air cargo containers, burial urns and cemetery products and even tornado shelters are some examples of rotomolding product conversions.
Polyethylene and rotational molding can also be used to prolong the life of parts made from other materials. Lining metal tanks or parts with polyethylene to extend the lifespan of the metal is also a growing trend. This prolongs the life of carbon steel and stainless steel tanks, allowing them to perform effectively in service for a longer duration of time. The Polyethylene also protects the metal tanks in many aspects, as some of the chemical contents of these tanks is so corrosive or caustic that it will attack or degrade the steel materials or even the weld seams. While the metal construction on many of these tanks is susceptible to such attacks, Polyethylene is resiliant and suitable for the storage of a variety of acidic and basic chemicals. The special polyethylene lining can be applied to the inside of a tank or component through the rotomolding process, adding durability and chemical resistance to an otherwise limited material.

Rotational molding is a process that extends to many industries and applies to parts both large and small. The ability to manufacture parts in either large or small quantities makes this process suitable for companies of all sizes. Rotomolding offers a growing potential to companies and emgineers as the process offers a plethora of benefits in providing high quality molded solutions.
